Working Group Meeting: The Role of Frankincense in Changing Societies
Frankincense is a gum resin with a rich cultural history and a lasting influence on healing practices in Germany and Arab countries. While its healing qualities have been demonstrated to be effective, there is often a lack of specific scientific research to back this up. This is why the Working Group Health & Society highlights frankincense from an interdisciplinary research perspective examining its effects on health in the context of ecological developments, new technological methods, economic processes and socio-cultural developments for the 21st century.
To explore research endeavours and discuss the connecting points among each other, members of the working group meet together with AGYA alumni in Salalah, Oman, which a world-class centre for aroma production and also has its own frankincense museum. For three days the working group will invite experts from Salalah for a joint workshop, visits farms and an archaeological site to get insights on frankincese production today and historically, and explore value chains on the local market.
The event is organized by AGYA in collaboration with Sultan Qaboos University’s Humanities Research Center and The Majan Council.
