Turning Waste into Wealth: The AGYA Playbook on Circularity

Laboratory Studies and Publication

Our world is facing a critical waste crisis. Every year, 931 million tonnes of food waste alone are discarded globally. Agricultural and industrial processing generates millions of tonnes of biowaste, from banana peels to tomato leaves, that are simply left unused instead of being utilised. In rapidly urbanising regions and developing nations in particular, inadequate waste management infrastructure leads to significant environmental pollution and public health problems.

Creating prototypes of circular economy products

This working group project tackles this challenge through an innovative, transdisciplinary approach that bridges science, community engagement, and practical innovation. In the project, AGYA members create prototypes that transform food and agricultural waste into valuable products for use in the cosmetics, healthcare, and agriculture sectors. The transformation process and the prototypes are featured in the AGYA Playbook on Circularity.

The playbook collects best practices of circular economy products from diverse socio-cultural and industrial contexts in Germany and various Arab countries, thereby making the principles of a circular economy accessible across disciplines and cultural contexts. Circular economy is an economic model that seeks to minimize waste and maximize the efficient use of resources by keeping products, materials, and resources in circulation for as long as possible.

The AGYA Playbook on Circularity seeks to spark a shift, especially through studies and field stories, by highlighting how circular practices, community initiatives, and innovative prototypes can transform waste into valuable and sustainable solutions.

By showcasing successful AGYA initiatives such as one in Libya, where stakeholder engagement and interdisciplinary collaboration were used to overhaul medical waste management, the project aims to catalyse similar systemic changes in waste management. The playbook provides concrete, practice-oriented insights and is intended to serve as both an informational and inspirational resource. Readers are encouraged to get to know initiatives around the Arab regions and Germany and become active themselves. Practical guidelines encourage conscious consumerism, advocating for the support of local and eco-friendly products, while offering actionable steps for upcycling, recycling, and mindful consumption.
