Housing Development in Metropolitan Cities: Analysis, Comparison, Debate
THIS CALL IS CLOSED!
Call for Papers
The objective of this international conference is to analyse and compare housing in metropolitan cities around the globe – with a focus on Arab countries and Germany – from an interdisciplinary perspective. The aim is
- to analyse the architectural and urban characteristics of traditional, modern and contemporary residential spaces,
- to compare their distinctive features, and
- to reflect on their spatial organisation, design, and appearance in different urban contexts.
The topic of the conference is not limited to a special kind of architectural style. Instead, the contributions should aim to emphasize different approaches to face the challenges of contemporary housing projects and pay special attention to affordability, flexibility, and adaptability to people’s culture and needs. In metropolitan cities, public facilities and infrastructure development are of particular importance to both social and economic stability. The residential areas were built progressively within their reach, following a general plan, in order to create a coherent assemblage of various districts, of different types of architecture, and dwellings around an attractive and modern centre.
However, today, with urbanisation, it seems difficult to escape a repetitive architecture, due to prefabrication processes used by property developers all around the world. The ideology of globalisation suggests that sooner or later, it will be impossible to escape from a uniform way of life, where certain common needs are met, and cities follow similar patterns of construction. What effects will this have on urban lives?
For present and future generations and the long-term liveability of a metropolis, best practices are needed in order to improve social, economic, and environmental conditions. Moreover, greater efforts must be made in increasing inhabitants’ participation into all stages of the development process. The conference will give emphasis to local architecture, urban planning, and socio-cultural aspirations in the contexts of various metropolises.
