Working Group Meeting

Women in STEM Education and Career Pathways

Workshop

Boosting opportunities and awareness for women in STEM education and career pathways workshop was organised by the Working Group Energy, Water and Environment in association with the American University of Ras Al Khaimah, UAE from 13 to 16 January 2017.

The workshop focused especially on boosting opportunities and awareness for women in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education. Although women increasingly study and work in the life sciences disciplines, they are vastly outnumbered by men in degree programs relating to engineering and technology. In STEM research and R&D jobs generally, their levels of participation similarly do not come close to those of men. The workshop considered key challenges involved in bringing about greater equality, visibility and opportunities for women within STEM. Over the course of the two days, prominent women from Germany and different Arab countries within the fields of math, science, technology and engineering delivered lectures on their own personal experiences and how the situation could potentially be improved.
