Tandem Project
Science Communication Through Comics
Complex scientific concepts can seem inaccessible to young minds or difficult to connect with their everyday experiences. Yet, an interest in scientific research, especially STEM, can develop at a young age, given the proper circumstances and resources are made available. AGYA alumna Suhair Sunoqrot has partnered with AGYA member Franziska Lissel to explore comics as a medium to communicate complex scientific concepts to young people. The project aimed to inspire young people, especially girls, to pursue careers in science and technology, while addressing the unique challenges and opportunities of pursuing scientific careers.
Developing creative strategies to communicate complex topics
A hands-on workshop, which took place in Amman, Jordan, led by science communication trainer Mohamed Elsonbaty Ramadan, focused on effective science communication through comics. Participants immersed themselves in the creative process of comic development, engaging in diverse activities that explore storytelling, character development, and visual narrative techniques. A key focus of the workshop was learning how to present their own excellent research in a more accessible way through the comic medium. The workshop brought together AGYA members and alumni/ae with excellent researchers from Al-Zaytoonah University Jordan, who collaborate with emerging comic illustrator Sereena Hamad to develop creative strategies for communicating complex STEM through comics.
Igniting an Interest in STEM at a Young Age
This collaborative effort has resulted in "The Adventures of Salma," the first AGYA science comic series published in Arabic. The series follows its young protagonist, Salma, as she embarks on a creative journey discovering her passion for science through everyday adventures. Through her character, young readers can explore scientific concepts in a relatable and engaging way.
Available in both digital and print formats, this project represented a significant step forward in science communication in Arabic. By combining scientific accuracy with engaging storytelling, "The Adventures of Salma" establishes a promising model for future science education initiatives. Through relatable characters and real-world applications, this first issue marks the beginning of what promises to be an inspiring series for young Arabic-speaking audiences.
Salma is made to mirror the average young Jordanian girl, her day to day challenges and priorities. The idea is that girls reading the comic can see themselves reflected in her journey. While crafting this character wasn't easy, it was essential to show Arabic-speaking girls everywhere that STEM isn't just fascinating, it's already woven into the fabric of their everyday lives and well within their reach.
