Workshop: Vine and Wine - Visual, Material and Literary Cultures from Antiquity to Islam

What can the history of the vine and wine tell us about the cultural connections between Europe and the Arab world?

This international workshop, organised in collaboration with the University of Vienna, Austria, will explore the fascinating and often overlooked cultural history of viticulture in the Near East and Europe.

Bringing together scholars from diverse academic disciplines, the workshop will trace the many ways in which the vine and wine have shaped agricultural practices, trade, artistic expression, literature, social life, and religious thought from antiquity to the early Islamic period.
Looking beyond geographical, cultural, and religious boundaries, the workshop seeks to uncover shared traditions, unexpected connections, and lasting cultural exchanges between Europe and the Arab world. It will also lay the groundwork for a new international research network dedicated to exploring this rich and interconnected heritage.
