Salon: Berlin-Cairo Express – Two Cosmopolitan Centres of the Early 20th Century in Exchange

Salon

This year’s Christmas Salon of the Centre Prussia-Berlin will delve into the myriad interactions between Berlin and Cairo during the first half of the 20th century in an interdisciplinary discussion between Egyptology and Musicology. AGYA member Matthias Pasdzierny will present research findings from his collaborative AGYA projects including a live demonstration of historical wax cylinder recordings.

Musicologist Brigitte Schiffer captured the historical sounds of Siwa Oasis musicians on wax cylinders, and she ingeniously incorporated these themes into her composition for a classical string quartet. As a highlight of the evening event, this string quartett will be performed live led by violinist Thomas Kretschmer from the University of Potsdam.

AGYA is honored to join the 2023 Christmas Salon by Centre Prussia-Berlin of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities (BBAW) as a cooperation partner to explore mutual research relations between Berlin and Cairo as cosmopolitan cities in the early 20th century.
