Everybody is talking about Syrian refugees these days, but the refugees themselves hardly get a chance to speak. The art-meets-science-project „Drawings of War and Flight“ therefore centres on the drawings of the Syrian artist couple Ayman Aldarwish and Nasim Kasem. In 40 artworks, the artists document and process their months-long flight across the Mediterranean Sea and the Balkans and develop a vision for a peaceful coexistence of all people, presenting an internal perspective on the migration flows that reached our societies in the last years. They thus offer a very personal and at the same time very expressive contribution to the debate on migration, Syria, and Islam. The art is embedded in an academic programme of four evening lectures that elucidate important artistic, social and cultural aspects of the artworks and the artists as well as refugees in general.

The workshop discusses the relevance of science journalism in Arab and German societies. It connects excellent scientists across cultures and disciplines, and elaborates on innovative and relevant topics by bringing journalists and scientists from different countries together. The overarching question is how the role of science journalism differs from an international perspective across cultures. What issues are similar or different in science journalism? What challenges exist for science journalism? Journalists and scholars discuss these questions intensively in the course of the two days. Field visits to Spectrum Science Center adds the practical relevance of science communication in everyday life.
