Gender Equality in the Arab World and Germany: Challenges and Prospects

29 Nov - 03 Dec 2018

Centre for Women and Development, Fez, Morocco

As of 2017, gender equality is the fifth of seventeen sustainable development goals of the United Nations. In all parts of the world, women have contributed to economic and social life in addition to nation building throughout the centuries. Yet women continue to be underrepresented politically and economically especially in positions of power. Studies on the status of women in Arab countries reveal that women in these countries are on average more disadvantaged economically, politically, and socially than women in other regions, especially those that are more economically advanced such as Europe. Gender equality is still an issue that requires work on many levels and it is the responsibility of governments, the media, educational and cultural institutions, and many more, to make gender equality a public concern.

During a two-day workshop at the Centre for Women and Development in Fez, Morocco, experts and practitioners in the field of gender and women's studies share ideas and expertise on gender equality in the Arab and the German context. The workshop is organised by the AGYA Working Group Common Heritage and Common Challenges in collaboration with Fatima Sadiqi, Professor of Linguistics and Gender Studies at Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdallah University and director of the Centre for Women and Development in Fez, Morocco and Nawar al-Hasan Golley, Professor in Literary Theory and Gender Studies at the American University of Sharjah, UAE.

On the first day of the workshop, current challenges and desiderata in the field of gender, especially women’s equality, will be addressed. The second day will be dedicated to identifying and discussing agents, methods and tools of change. This workshop will serve as a platform to create a network amongst activists and academics to discuss ways to accelerate positive change.

Conference organisers: Dr. Nuha Al-Shaar, Dr. Beate La Sala
