Key Activities

Along with the research projects, members of the Arab-German Young Academy of Sciences and Humanities (AGYA) engage in various activities of the academy. Furthermore, all AGYA members meet twice a year in a general assembly. The assembly takes decisions on all matters of general importance to AGYA. The annual assemblies are also an ideal opportunity for members to meet face-to-face and to decide upon their next research projects, as well as to receive new input for their work.



AGYA’s Alumni Network Keeps Members Connected and Interdisciplinary Cooperation Flowing

In 2018, AGYA celebrated its five-year anniversary and the matriculation of the first generation of AGYA members into the AGYA Alumni Network. Going forward, the first batch of 20 AGYA alumni will continue to benefit from connection and collaboration with the broader AGYA community.

‘The Right Measure’ from Arab and German perspectives: AGYA contributes to the Salon Sophie Charlotte 2019 of the BBAW

AGYA’s contribution to Salon Sophie Charlotte in January 2019 explored the various connotations of the German expression “Das Rechte Maß” (The Right Measure) from the mathematical idea of measurement to the philosophical and legal idea of balance and good judgement.

Aesthetics and the Human Scale in Contemporary Architecture in Germany and the Arab World: AGYA contributes to the Aesthetic Salon of the BBAW

AGYA invited renowned Lebanese architect Bernard Khoury and prominent German architect and design professor Friedrich von Borries to debate human scale as a basic principle in design as well as the political apects of architecture.

Women’s Empowerment in Science, Technology and Innovation (WE-STI 2018)

In line with AGYA’s aim to foster interdisciplinary and intercultural exchange on the boundary between science and society, AGYA and ASRT chose to mark the special occasion of the Regional Office’s opening by hosting their first collaborative conference on the topic of Women’s Empowerment in Science, Technology and Innovation (WE-STI 2018).

AGYA Annual Conference 2018 in Egypt

This year’s AGYA Annual Conference took place in Egypt from 26 to 28 October 2018. During the conference, AGYA members warmly welcomed 14 new members. The members convened in the General Assembly to discuss the recent, current and upcoming activities of the academy, in addition to holding elections for the 2019 AGYA Steering Committee and Co-Presidents.

AGYA Opens New Office in Cairo: Arab-German Research Cooperation in Action

On 25 October 2018, the Arab-German Young Academy of Sciences and Humanities (AGYA) celebrated the official opening of its new Regional Office located within the Egyptian Academy of Scientific Research and Technology (ASRT) in Cairo. On the occasion of the opening festivities in Cairo the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) announced the award of an additional 3.3 million euro in funding to AGYA.

In a highly competitive selection process, 14 excellent new AGYA members from a wide range of disciplines were selected out of more than 400 applications in 2018. AGYA Annual Conference in Kuwait

'We look forward to the emergence of versatile networks between scientists from both sides, which can be translated later into active participation of young Kuwaiti researchers in AGYA, and in joint efforts to support scientific research between Kuwait and Germany in the framework of AGYA'. Combining Science with Entertainment: AGYA Science Comic Wins Science Outreach Slam

How to gain the public’s enthusiasm for science? In an AGYA contest on projects that engaged society with science, a group of Arab and German scholars presented their research at the 1st AGYA Science Outreach Slam in Kuwait. It was AGYA member, Dr. Jan Friesen, the co-author of the AGYA Science Comic Vol.1, who won the contest.

Exhibition: 'Arab and German Tales – Transcending Cultures'

The Arab and German Tales exhibition at Qatar National Library (QNL), a member of Qatar Foundation (QF), which opened to the public on 17 April 2018, traces how some of the best known tales from both Arab and German – and wider Western – cultures developed from common roots, splitting over the centuries to reflect the societies that adopted them.

AGYA Annual Conference in Amman

From 26 to 29 October 2017, the members of AGYA met for their Annual Conference in Amman, Jordan. The members elected a new AGYA Steering Committee as well as two co-presidents for a one-year term. Six new Arab and five German members were inaugurated in a celebratory ceremony into the academy.
